Department of Neuropsychiatry

General Description of the Department

We have been devoting ourselves to clinical practice, education and research related to psychiatric disorders since the Department of Neuropsychiatry was established in April, 1983.
Clinics: Clinical services have been offered mainly for patients with affective disorders; now the scope has been expanded for a range of psychiatric disorders including schizophrenia, autism spectrum disorders, eating disorders, major neurocognitive disorders and substance use disorders. We also serve to offer consultation-liaison psychiatry and palliative care in cooperation with other clinical departments, and represent one of the handful places in Japan where general genetic counseling is provided by certified experts.
Education: Our mission is to provide accurate information on mental disorders and convey the fact that psychiatry is a field of high clinical importance as well as tremendous academic interests. Evidence-based education is expected to afford sustainable, unbiased knowledge for all medical students irrespective of their future specialties and careers.
Research: We are in charge of both clinical and basic research regarding psychiatric disorders and behavioral disturbances. Our approach includes, but is not limited to, neuropsychopharmacological, neuroimaging, neuropathological, genetic, cell-biological and pharmaco-behavioral analyses.
